Sand play thanks to Mackins

22nd Jan 2026

A sand play area is a simple setup that gives pupils so much more than it looks like. When children dig, pour, scoop, and build, they are strengthening their fine motor skills and hand eye coordination without even realising. It also supports early math and science learning as they compare amounts, test what sinks or holds shape, and experiment with water and sand together. Sand play is also amazing for creativity and imagination too. One moment it’s a bakery the next it’s a building site or a tiny desert world. It encourages kids to talk, share tools, solve little problems, and work together which build social communication skills in a very natural way.

There’s also a calming side to sand play. The feel of sand in the hands can help children relax, focus and self regulate, especially after a busy or noisy activity. Plus because it’s open-ended and outdoors or nature based, kids feel free to explore, get a little messy and truly enjoy learning through play.
